Family Guide to Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is the Klein Karoo's family capital, and it runs on two reliable crowd-pleasers: ostriches and caves. It's a dry-heat, big-sky town where outings follow the temperature — underground or under thatch in the midday heat, outdoors in the golden mornings and late afternoons.

The Cango Caves are the obvious anchor, and the standard Heritage Tour is genuinely manageable for most school-age kids (skip the Adventure Tour with under-12s and anyone unsure about tight spaces). Pair the caves with the Cango Wildlife Ranch up the road — cheetahs, crocs and a well-run kids' programme — or with Meerkat Adventures at sunrise, which is worth the early alarm for the sight of wild meerkats emerging to warm up. Ostrich farms are the other Oudtshoorn staple: Safari Ostrich Farm and Highgate Ostrich Show Farm both do the classic tractor-tour-and-feeding morning. For a low-key afternoon, Wilgewandel Holiday Farm adds camel rides and paddle boats to the farm formula.

Karoo practicalities: summer middays regularly pass 35°C, so book cave tours for the hottest hours (a constant 18°C inside) and keep water in the car everywhere. Winter nights drop near freezing but the days are clear and mild — arguably the best season for the farms.
