Mr Funtubbles The Glen
📍 Soweto
⭐ 3.6 / 5
Mr Funtubbles The Glen provides a dynamic indoor entertainment experience, specifically situated within The Glen Shopping Centre in Soweto. The venue's atmosphere is characterised by a bright, stimulating environment filled with the sounds and visuals of various electronic games and active play. It primarily serves as an arcade and soft-play centre, offering children a range of activities that blend physical movement with digital interaction. Children typically spend their time navigating multi-level climbing structures, sliding down slides, and bouncing on trampolines in the dedicated soft-play zones. Elsewhere, the floor is packed with a wide array of arcade machines. These include classic video games, racing simulators that immerse players in virtual driving challenges, shooting galleries requiring precision and quick reflexes, and games of skill where players aim to win tickets. These tickets can then be redeemed for small prizes at the counter, a system that often motivates sustained engagement. The venue distinguishes itself from outdoor parks by offering a fully contained, climate-controlled space, ensuring that weather conditions do not interrupt play. Its focus on interactive digital entertainment and ticket redemption prizes offers a different kind of play experience, contrasting with the more open-ended, natural play found in traditional outdoor settings. This concentration of diverse mechanical and electronic activities provides a consistent, high-energy environment distinct from other types of children's venues.
This venue is particularly suitable for children aged approximately 4 to 12 years. Younger children, from around under-3, will find enjoyment in the softer, padded play areas designed for gentler exploration, while those aged 4-7 can fully engage with the main soft-play structures and many of the simpler arcade games. Children in the 8-12 age bracket often gravitate towards the more competitive arcade challenges, racing games, and skill-based machines, where earning high scores and tickets is a key draw. A typical visit here might last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the children’s age and their level of engagement with the various activities. As an establishment located within a shopping mall, Mr Funtubbles is an entirely indoor venue, meaning it is not subject to outdoor elements like direct sun or wind, and the environment is temperature-regulated. Parking is readily available within The Glen Shopping Centre's extensive parking facilities, though these are paid parking zones. The venue itself and the mall are generally pram and stroller friendly, offering wide passageways and lift access for easy movement. Being fully indoors, there are no concerns about shaded versus sun-exposed areas. Toilets and baby changing facilities are accessible within the shopping centre, often located a short walk from the Mr Funtubbles entrance.
A practical tip for parents considering a visit involves planning around South Africa’s load-shedding schedules. As a venue heavily reliant on electricity for its arcade machines, lights, and other electronic attractions, an unexpected power outage can significantly diminish the experience. While The Glen Shopping Centre usually operates with generator backup during load shedding, the extent to which all individual arcade games and specialised machines within Mr Funtubbles are fully powered and functional during such periods can vary. It is advisable to check the current load-shedding schedule for Soweto prior to your intended visit. If an outage is scheduled, consider calling the venue directly to confirm their operational status and the range of activities available under generator power. This proactive step can help manage expectations and avoid potential disappointment for children eager to play specific games that might be offline during a power interruption.
