School-holiday checklist — planning a SA family day-out

The difference between a great family day out and a memorable disaster, in our experience, is almost never the destination. It's the planning. After enough Decembers we've boiled it down to a checklist — print it, screenshot it, tape it to your fridge.

The night before

The day bag — kids under 8

The day bag — kids 8 and up

Same as above, plus:

The 9am pivot

Most family disasters can be predicted by 9am. Run a quick check before leaving:

The sunset cut-off

Outdoor SA in summer means UV that catches you out, sudden thunderstorms, and roads that get hectic at peak hour. Our hard rule: aim to be in the car by 90 minutes before sunset. You'll arrive home in light, nobody overheated, dinner still possible.

Post-mortem

Once or twice a year, do a quick post-mortem with the family. "What was the best part?" "What would we change?" Write the answer in your phone notes. By the third post-mortem you'll have a personalised playbook nobody else can copy.
