Free things to do with kids in Pretoria
Pretoria is a city of jacaranda-lined parks, accidental nature reserves, and government-owned heritage sites where children can run around without anyone minding. It's also dry, sunny and high-altitude — so the rhythm of a free day-out is different from Cape Town or Durban. You want to be outdoors early, undercover by midday, and back outside in the late afternoon when the light goes golden.
Here's the rough plan we'd build for a family with two kids under 10, no budget, and one car.
Start early at a park you've probably overlooked
Pretoria's better-known parks (Magnolia Dell, Springbok Park, Burgers Park) all work fine, but on a Saturday morning they fill up by 9am. The under-the-radar pick is Wonderboom Nature Reserve on the north edge of the city — a 1 000-year-old wild fig tree the size of a small forest, with short walks suited to little legs and big rocky outcrops that toddlers treat as a personal jungle gym. Entry is free or near-free for SA residents (check current rules), and there's enough shade to last well past the morning's first snack.
If you'd rather stay central, Magnolia Dell opposite UNISA's Sunnyside campus is a classic with stream, ducks, swings and easy parking on Anderson Street. It's the kind of park where you can wear out a toddler in 45 minutes flat.
Mid-morning: a museum that's free on the right day
Pretoria is unusually well-served by free or near-free museums, but the trick is knowing which day. A few that have run free entry days for SA residents in recent years (always check the day before — these rotate):
- Ditsong National Museum of Natural History (formerly Transvaal Museum) on Paul Kruger Street. Dinosaur skeletons, the hominid hall and a "Discovery Room" aimed squarely at under-10s. Even at full price it's one of the cheapest indoor activities in Tshwane.
- Freedom Park on Salvokop. The hilltop site itself is free to walk; the museum has an entry fee. The walks, views and reflective spaces are genuinely beautiful and surprisingly engaging for older kids if you explain what the names on the wall mean.
- Pretoria Art Museum in Arcadia Park. Small, manageable in 45 minutes, never crowded. The surrounding park makes the visit a half-day even without spending more than parking change.
Lunch on the grass
Pack a cooler bag. The reliable family-grade picnic spots are Union Buildings gardens (huge, terraced, the kids can run for ages), Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary (R10-ish entry for SA residents at last check — a wetland with hides and waterbirds), and Groenkloof Nature Reserve for older children who can manage a 5km walking trail. All three have safe-feeling parking, public toilets and enough shade that you won't melt.
Late afternoon: a koppie
Pretoria's geography gifts you a small mountain at the edge of nearly every suburb. Two excellent free options:
- Klapperkop Nature Reserve (north slope of the Magaliesberg hills, accessible by car). A short loop, big views over the city, and a small free fort museum at the top if it's open.
- Faerie Glen Nature Reserve out east. Marked walking trails from 1km to 5km, picnic tables, zebra and small antelope visible from the path. Kids love spotting wildlife on the way to nowhere in particular.
One bonus that costs almost nothing
Most City of Tshwane libraries run a free weekly under-5s storytime — your local branch can give you the schedule. They're quietly the best rainy-Wednesday rescue in the city.
What to pack
Sun hats (Pretoria sun is not Cape Town sun — it's higher, drier, sharper). Refillable water bottles for everyone. A picnic blanket. Snacks for double the time you think you'll be out. A second pair of socks per child for the inevitable.
